River Valley St John Ambulance Brigade was first founded on 26th August 1960 with the establishment of the River Valley Ambulance Student Division. Its birth was marked by an inspection of the contingents by the Area Commissioner of St John Ambulance Brigade West Central Area, Mr. Lim Chi Koh, and the principal of River Valley High School, Mr. Lim Hui Eng. At that time, Mr. Lim had graciously accepted the position as the first Divisional President while the Officer-in-charge was none other than Mr. Ng Peng Fai.
In the following year, on 29th January, River Valley Nursing Student Division was proudly introduced to the Corps. The first Officer-in-charge for the River Valley Nursing Student Division was Madam Tham Ying Ee. Ever since, the formation of both the River Valley Ambulance Student Division and the River Valley Nursing Student Division had allowed students to work towards contributing to society, fulfilling the brigade’s motto – “Service for Mankind”.
Besides engaging our members in First Aid classes and experiential training camps, the welfare of our members was never neglected. There were the games and tournaments, educational tours as well as picnics and recreational camps.
On 19th October 1961, River Valley Ambulance Student Division sent in its pioneer team for the National First Aid Competition. The team did the well and was placed second on their first attempt. Subsequently, River Valley has been performing well in competitions and has represented the Area, the Corps and the nation at various competitions with outstanding achievements.
In early 1968, River Valley Ambulance Student Division B was officially set up with the expansion of the corps. Later in the year, River Valley Nursing Student Division B and Jalan Kuala Ambulance Division were formed. Exactly 33 years ago, on 24th June 1972, the division separated from the 5th Corps to form the 9th Corps. In 1978, we become part of District D, Area 9 and finally in 1996, we became River Valley Corps under Zone 9.
